A view from
the top of Sand Mountain
|
|
Sand Mountain
is, well, huge. At it's base was a small city of R.V. campers
and tents. I was told that on any given 3-day weekend, thousands
of campers and enthusiast fill the valley. Scurrying through the
camp was all sorts of off road vehicles from dune buggy to 4-wheelers
to bikes. Shade awnings sheltered tables and chairs where others
were relaxing or working on their machines.
I wanted a
photo of the view from the top of Sand Mountain
so I found a ridge to the left of the face that was covered with
brush and rocks. It didn't look too traveled so I thought I could
climb without getting run over. It was a bit of a workout but
I finally made it to the top. The view was spectacular. It had
rained a few days before so the sand was fairly packed.

| At the
top of Sand Mountain, I was chatting with a few of the guys,
one asked how I got up there. When I told them I had climbed,
they couldn't believe it. One brave rider, Eric Snediker offered
me a ride down on the back of his 4 wheeler. Let me tell you
it's a lot bigger thrill coming down off the mountain going
full speed than it was climbing on foot. I'll be going back
soon, but next time, I'm taking a 4 wheeler! |

I found
two groups of people, those showing off on the mountain and
those showing off around their rides. I saw what must have been
a 3 year old buzzing around on a little Honda QA-50 as well
as older folks just enjoying the sites. While Sand Mountain
will give the experienced rider a thrill, there are hills for
every level of experience.
Make sure
your OHV is licenced and has a masted flag. The rangers were
out in force with ticket books in hand.
