While photographing a home for Clayton Wilkinson at Probe, I had a chance to chat with the owner of the home about his speed boat and 4 wheelers. The conversation led to one of the most exciting outdoor activities within a few hours of Salt Lake, the Little Sahara. Last weekend I grabbed by camera and headed south...
How do I get there? Click Here. (Location: From Nephi go 34 miles west on Highway 132 and County Road.)
Elevation 5000 - 5400 feet. These rolling dunes are comprised of 60,000 acres of free-moving sand dunes, sagebrush flats, and juniper-covered hills. The dunes are an ideal dune-buggy playground, while the sagebrush flats and surrounding mountains are a challenge for motorcycles and 4-wheel drive vehicles. Campgrounds can be found at Jericho, Sand Mountain, Oasis, and White Sands. Group camping is available at Sand Mountain. - publiclands.org

My directions were sketchy, go to Nephi and head west. We stopped at the local Walker gas station for thirst buster refills, (We were heading into a desert) and ask for directions. Go West, said the cashier. The steady stream of off road vehicle trailers assured us we were headed in the right direction so we joined a west going caravan and took off for adventure.

Half a thirst buster later (or about 30 miles) we could see the sand dunes on the horizon. Winding through the desert, we reached a pay kiosk and a sign that read "6 days since the last serious accident". (Nothing this good was going to be free) $6.00 later, we were watching little black dots of four wheelers sailing over huge dunes of pure yellow sand. There are 4 different camp grounds so bring a tent. Also, bring lots of extra gas. Nephi seemed to be the closest gas station.

Then, looming in the distance, Sand Mountain, the tallest freestanding sand dune in the United States. Note: I didn't verify this fact, it was made known to me by a reliable looking dune enthusiast. I can verify, however, that it did look big.
